Read along with Sister Mary's parish book club, the Wisdom Seekers, as they enjoy A Man Called Ove. Let her know what you think in the comments below!
By Sister Mary Core, OSB
I just finished reading a wonderful book, loaded with the realities of living.
I laughed. I cried. I was filled with emotions across the spectrum.
And I met characters about whom we could all say, “Yeah. I know someone like that!”
A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman is a New Your Times best seller that our Wisdom Seekers Book Club has just begun to read. I had a hard time putting it down.
Ove (pronounced Oo-vuh) is a curmudgeon, if ever there was one.
But the more I read, the more I was taken by this hard-nosed, tender-hearted Swede, whose world is filled with “idiots.”
This is a different focus for our book club, since we usually read more spiritual or theological books.
That said, there’s a lot of opportunity for reflection in this book about first impressions, loss, anger, judgment, openness, vulnerability, love, and much more.
I invite you to read the book with us and delve into its deeper meaning. I’ll post some questions for your reflection and discussion (almost all of which I found on the internet).
Our book club meets on Wednesday mornings and will be using these questions as discussion starters.
Following our meeting and sharing each week I’ll post some of the insights which surface among our “Wisdom Seekers.”
I invite you to share with us your insights about this great and very readable novel with us, too.
Have a good week and a good read!
