Finding Strength in Weakness

Finding Strength in Weakness

The word “Lent” actually literally means Springtime, the perfect season for renewal! Here’s Sister Mary’s Week #3 of the mini-retreat that will refresh your soul throughout Lent. Here’s a list of all of the weeks’ posts.

By Sister Mary Core, OSB

“My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness.” (2 Corinthians 12:9)

Throughout the past 2 weeks, we’ve been grains of wheat trying to die to self in order to allow new life to happen, and we’ve tried to still our hearts and minds.

Are you wondering if you’re up to this?

If so, you’re not alone. St. Paul faces similar doubts and questions as he struggles with following Jesus.

Three times he asks that the “thorn in his side” be removed! But God answers Paul not by removing the thorn, but rather with an assurance of God’s unending love and presence:

“My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness.”

Take time to read and reflect on 2 Corinthians 12: 7b-10.

As you continue your Lenten journey – trying to die to your old self – trust that God’s love, manifest in Jesus, is more than enough to carry you.

As you work daily to quiet the voices, the distractions, the temptations and the excesses of life, trust that God’s grace will be there to “still” you and focus you on your way.

Like Paul, be content with your weaknesses … for when we are weak, then we are strong!

Questions for reflection…

Do you believe God’s grace is enough for you?

Who or what are the “thorns” in your life?

Can you recall times when grace got you through a time of trial?

Have you ever experienced strength coming from what was “weakness”?

Does trusting in God’s grace give you confidence to do things you felt were too difficult?

What areas of your life are most in need of God’s grace?

Through whom or what have you received God’s sufficient grace?
